Phenotypic stability and genetic gains in six-year girth growth of Hevea clones PAB
Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Fujihara,Alberto Kazutoshi; Ortolani,Altino Aldo; Bataglia,Ondino Cleante; Bortoletto,Nelson; Segnini Junior,Ivo.
Rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg.] budgrafts of seven clones were evaluated on five contrasting sites in the plateau region of the São Paulo State, Brazil. The objective of this work was to study the phenotypic stability for girth growth. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three replications and seven treatments. Analysis of variance of girth at six-year plant growth indicated a highly significant clone x site interaction. Only linear sites and clone x site components of clone x year interaction were significant, indicating that the performance of clones over sites for this trait could be predicted. The clones GT 1 and PB 235 showed the greatest stability in relation to girth growth, with foreseen...

Prediction of seed-yield potential of common bean populations Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Santos,João Bosco dos.
Earliest possible prediction of seed-yield potential of autogamous crop populations increases breeding program efficiency by saving time and resources. Alternatives for obtaining seed-yield predictions were compared by evaluating four common-bean populations in F1 and F2 generations together with the parents. Mean components (m + a' and d) and variances were estimated. The potential of each population was predicted by using both these and the Jinks and Pooni (1976) procedure, which allows probability estimation of each population of originating lines surpassing a determined standard. Estimate efficiency was determined by evaluating performances of 62 F5:7 families from each population. Mean component m + a' estimates obtained for the F1 and F2 generations...

Provenance and family variation of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis from Guatemala and Honduras, grown in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela PAB
Moura,Vicente Pongitory Gifoni; Dvorak,William Stephen.
Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis (Sénécl) Barr. & Golf. is a tropical pine that naturally occurs in lowland areas of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and eastern Mexico. It has been one of the most studied tropical pines and the one with the most commercial importance in Brazil. The objective of this work was to select the best provenances for plantations and best trees in families for the establishment of seed orchards. For that a trial with five provenances and 47 open-pollinated families was planted near Planaltina, Federal District, in the Cerrado Region of Brazil. The provenances tested were Poptun (Guatemala), Gualjoco, Los Limones, El Porvenir and Santa Cruz de Yojoa (Honduras) and assessed at 12 years of age. Poptun and...

Quantifying the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Vandeputte, Marc; Mekkawy, Wagdy; Chatain, Beatrice; Benzie, John A. H..
Background: Improving feed efficiency in fish is crucial at the economic, social and environmental levels with respect to developing a more sustainable aquaculture. The important contribution of genetic improvement to achieve this goal has been hampered by the lack of accurate basic information on the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in fish. We used video assessment of feed intake on individual fish reared in groups to estimate the genetic parameters of six growth traits, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake in 40 pedigreed families of the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Feed intake and growth were measured on juvenile fish (22.4g mean body weight) during 13 consecutive meals, representing 7days of...

Quantitative genetic variation for post-stress cortisol and swimming performance in growth-selected and control populations of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Porte, J. D.; Auperin, B.; Dupont-nivet, M.; Vergnet, Alain; Valotaire, C.; Claireaux, Guy; Prunet, P.; Chatain, Beatrice.
Sea bass is a major species in Mediterranean aquaculture, and is now being subject to selective breeding programs for faster growth. In terrestrial species, it was demonstrated that fast growth may be linked to a correlated degradation of fitness traits. In this experiment, we evaluated 600 young sea bass from a factorial mating of 76 sires and 13 dams. The sires were from four genetic groups, wild (W), domesticated (D), and selected for growth (2 groups, M and P). The 600 offspring were submitted to two acute confinement stress challenges at 6 weeks intervals, and plasma cortisol at one hour post stress was measured. The same fish were also submitted to two swimming challenges at a 5 days interval, where the maximum sustained swimming speed (Umax) of each...

Quantitative inheritance of some wheat plant traits Genet. Mol. Biol.
Novoselovic,D.; Baric,Marijana; Drezner,G.; Gunjaca,J.; Lalic,A..
The objective of this study was to estimate gene effects and genetic variability for some quantitative traits of two winter wheat crosses (Soissons/Zitarka and Soissons/Sana) by generation mean analysis. In most cases a digenic epistatic model was sufficient to explain variation in generation means. The additive-dominance model was adequate for plant height and grain weight per spike of the longest culm. In two cases (grain yield per plant and single grain weight) these models failed to explain variation in generation means, implying the presence of higher order interactions or interactions between linked loci. Dominance effects and additive x additive epistasis were more important than additive effects and other epistatic components. Only complementary...

Random regression models with B-splines to estimate genetic parameters for body weight of young bulls in performance tests R. Bras. Zootec.
Scalez,Daiane Cristina Becker; Fragomeni,Breno de Oliveira; Santos,Dalinne Chrystian Carvalho dos; Passafaro,Tiago Luciano; Alencar,Maurício Mello de; Toral,Fabio Luiz Buranelo.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for body weight of beef cattle in performance tests. Different random regression models with quadratic B-splines and heterogeneous residual variance were fitted to estimate covariance functions for body weights of Nellore and crossbred Charolais × Nellore bulls. The criteria −2 residual log-likelihood (−2RLL), Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and consistent AIC (CAIC) were used to choose the most appropriate model. For Nellore bulls, residual variance was modeled with six classes of age, and direct additive genetic and permanent environment effects were modeled with quadratic B-splines with two and one intervals, respectively. For crossbred bulls, quadratic B-splines with one...

Response to selection for growth in an interspecific hybrid between Oreochromis mossambicus and O. niloticus in two distinct environments ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Rosario, Westly; Vandeputte, Marc; Muyalde, Nerafe; Morissens, Pierre; Baroiller, Jean-francois; Chevassus, Bernard.
The development of a saline tolerant tilapia strain able to grow fast is of importance in the Philippines, where 240 000 ha of brackish water ponds are available. To this end, founder hybridization between Oreochromis niloticus (with favorable growth traits) and O. mossambicus (with favorable salinity tolerance traits) was performed and followed by backcrossing with O. mossambicus to develop a strain highly tolerant to saline environments. Genetic selection for growth performance was subsequently conducted. The aim of the present study was to estimate growth performance and survival of the hybrid in two rearing environments following four generations of genetic selection. A comparison between the hybrid and an internal reference line was performed in two...

Response to selection for increasing resistance to the spring mortality outbreaks in Mytilus edulis occurring in France since 2014 ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Maurouard, Elise; Rabiller, Manuella; Glize, Philippe.
Massive spring mortality outbreaks have been reported in Mytilus spp. in France since 2014. The main areas affected are the Pertuis Charentais Sounds and the coast of the Pays de la Loire, which cultivate mainly M. edulis, and the putative causal agents remain unknown. We report the results of the first generation of mass selection focused on survival and resistance to the spring mortality in M. edulis. Two stocks of mussels were sampled in the Pertuis Charentais Sounds in 2014; one of these went through a spring mortality outbreak and the survivors were used to produce the selected stock, while the second stock was M. edulis considered to be naïve against the putative causal agents of the mortality outbreak and was used to produce the control stock. A...

Selection and genetic gains for juvenile traits in progenies of Hevea in São Paulo State, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Martins,Antonio Lúcio Mello; Bortoletto,Nelson; Saes,Luis Alberto.
Five yield traits were investigated in three-year-old progenies from open-pollinated rubber trees [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss) Muell.-Arg.]. Twenty progenies were evaluated in a randomized, complete block design replicated three times using 10 plants per linear plot at the North Central Experimental Station in Pindorama, São Paulo State, Brazil. The characters evaluated included the average yield of rubber, growth vigor, bark thickness, total number of latex vessel rings and latex vessel size. Highly significant (p < 0.01) genetic differences were observed among progenies for most traits. The genotypic variance components accounted for 13.2%, 12.3%, 9.4%, 3.4% and 0.23% of the phenotypic variance for yield, growth vigor, bark thickness,...

Selection objectives and criteria for sheep in Central Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
McManus,Concepta; Pinto,Bruno Freitas; Martins,Rafhael Felipe Saraiva; Louvandini,Helder; Paiva,Samuel Rezende; Braccini Neto,José; Paim,Tiago do Prado.
Three production systems for sheep (Low - L, Medium - M and High - H technology), with increasing technological levels, were studied under conditions in the Center-west of Brazil, to determine economic weights and selection indices of important traits. Receipts and costs were simulated using an economic simulator to calculate the structure of the operational costs. Only characteristics that were responsible for more than 10% of the profit were studied, which included: number of weaned lambs, food consumption (ewe and lamb), weight of carcass and weight of female lambs sold for reproduction. Regardless of the index used (profitability or yield) or system (L, M or H), the economic weights are larger for the number of lambs weaned per ewe. With improvement in...

Selection strategies of segregant soybean populations for resistance to Asian rust PAB
Ribeiro,Aliny Simony; Toledo,José Francisco Ferraz de; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto.
The objective of this work was to identify the best selection strategies for the more promising parental combinations to obtain lines with good resistance to soybean Asian rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Two experiments were carried out in the field during the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 growing seasons, to determine the percentage of infected leaf area of individual plants of five parents and their segregant F2 and F3 populations. The data obtained indicates that additive genetic variance predominates in the control of soybean resistance to Asian rust, and that the year and time of assessment do not significantly influence the estimates of the genetic parameters obtained. The narrow-sense heritability (h²r) ranged from 23.12 to 55.83%, and indicates the...

Signature d'expression de gènes, Marqueur prédictif de capacités de survie chez l'huître Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bachere, Evelyne; Degremont, Lionel; Piquemal, David; Roman, Bruno; Noguier, Florian.
